BDMAS is not a special mass for the frail, or ill. BDMAS, is a simple mnemonic device for helping people remember the order of operations, when faced with a multi-step math question, such as:
(25 x 5) + 75 – (20 ÷ 4) =
If the operations are done in the wrong order, your answer will be waaayyy off!
BDMAS stands for:
- Brackets
- Division
- Multiplication
- Addition
- Subtraction
Therefore the above question must be completed in this order:
(25 x 5) + 75 – (20 ÷ 4)
=(125) + 75 – (5) =
=(125) + 75 – (5)
= 200-5
= 195
Note: When it comes down to deciding between (multiplication and division) or (addition and subtraction). You can choose whichever you prefer to do first.
For example:
25 x 10 ÷ 2
= 250 ÷ 2
=125
OR
25 x 10 ÷ 2
= 25 x 5
=125
So choose whichever calculation is faster and easier for you!
